This peaceful community is located between several lakes in the Lake Butler chain in Orange County. Located just 15 miles west of downtown Orlando and 9 miles north of Disney World, Windermere itself is only 689 acres. The beautiful peninsula boasts clear lakes, a quaint downtown area, and approximately 40% of the town’s residential properties are facing the water.

The approximately 3,000 residents of Windermere are enjoying the quiet suburban life. The majority of residents are couples and families due to the highly ranked schools in the area, as well as its close proximity to Orlando. Orange County Public Schools and Windermere Preparatory School are available for students living in the community.
What to Do?
Residents and visitors enjoy a casual downtown area with a mix of mom & pop shops and older homes along unpaved streets. Yes, unpaved streets. The main drag through town is paved, but most side streets are not. Many residents venture closer to Orlando for entertainment (Disney, Universal Studios, Sea World) and shopping. Restaurants within the city limits like Feather and Quill, Dixie Cream Cafe, Paloma Coffee Co., and Munchies Live BBQ, are all worth visiting when in the area.
The history of Windermere is also something that draws visitors and new residents to the area. Windermere is also home to the only surviving one-room schoolhouse in Orange County, and one of a few still remaining in the state of Florida. The Windermere Town Hall also has a significant history. Once the home to the Windermere Woman’s Club, the building was later repurposed to house the Chase Memorial Library, municipal offices, and basketball courts. The site is also home to the Cal Palmer Memorial Building, a small building constructed in 1911 by one of Windermere’s well-known early residents.
